The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology houses a collection of over 177,000 vials of tissue, blood, and protein extracts preserved from more than 114,000 specimens (amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and fish). The majority of samples are associated with vouchers in the MVZ specimen collections. Cataloged tissues are frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen tanks, although the original preservation method may have been in RNALater, ethanol, or other buffer solutions. Each tissue sample is barcoded in a hierarchical system for tracking object locations in Arctos. Additional samples used for active research projects or in process of curation are stored in ultralow or -20°C freezers.
