Accessioning and Cataloging

Accessioning is the formal process of accepting materials into the MVZ collections. The accession catalog is shared among all of the vertebrate collections.

Cataloging is the process of assigning a unique MVZ number to a specimen. Each collection has it’s own catalog series. Thus, if you search MVZ specimen collections for the number “1” you will get five records.

Each collection has its own procedures for accessioning and cataloging. Here are some guidelines that have been developed for the bird and herp collections.
